One of the world's most celebrated fashion designers was born in Tokyo in 1942. Surprisingly, she received no formal training as a designer. Kawakubo graduated in Arts and Literature, and started working as a stylist, until she established her own company, Comme des Garçons. I always wondered if the name ("Like the boys") refers to the ladies' fashion lib during the 20s, which enabled first them to wear trousers and cut their hair short.
She originally devoted to what could be called "anti-fashion": austere lines, deconstructed garments, unfinished edges, intentional holes, asymmetrical shapes, everything that would challenge the established notions of beauty.
