Formal wear updated

Thomas Miller's impeccably tailored tux (or rather tails?) is complemented here not with trousers, but with an ample, voluminous skirt. It was about time!

I displayed a similar outfit about a year ago but, since I'm no designer and, needless to say, no model, my results are quite less impressive. I'm posting them anyhow:

My own skirted version of a tuxedo

  1. Using a skirt is definitely a way forward, but in fact it would all be better in less heavy low heel shoes and more transparent stockings etc. See my website: antyfacet.com.pl (Antibloke General of Poland's Bulletin).

  2. This is actually pretty awesome. Never seen a full on black skirt as formal attire. Good going.

  3. I see what you mean, Antyfacet: you have a some pretty awsome pictures in your site. Too bad I don't understand Polish, but the Google translator helped me through. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

    R. Gratz: Thanks! My skirted tux has actually been very well received and complimented whenever I've worn it. I loved your blog, by the way. I hope you don't mind if I re-post some of the pics.

  4. I have for some time thought that a tux would be an excellent place to start with a skirt for a man. But instead of a long skirt, I envisaged a skirt about the length of a traditional kilt, but made of the same material as the tux jacket with narrow pleats. One would wear formal knee socks with this and formal shoes with a bit of a raised heel would probably enhance the overall look.

An elegant (and expensive) variation would be to make the inside of the pleats of the skirt a slighly different shade or texture.

  5. I'm forming a mental image of the setup you're suggesting, my anonymous friend, and It looks simply fantastic! (At least in my mind) I don't see why applying a different texture inside the pleats should significantly increase the outfit's overall price. I'd use the same satin as the jacket lapels, just as a satin stripe is applied at both sides of tuxedo pants. In fact, I think I'll actually make such kilt, matching the jacket I already have. If and when I do so, I'll post a pic.
What would you suggest as "formal footwear"? Classic men lace-shoes only that with a bit of heel? Or mary-janes? Or ballerinas? Would you wear hosiery? Thanks for the input. I hope you keep in touch.

  6. That sounds great -- the using the satin of the lapel in the inside of the pleats.

As for hoisery, one could go for knee socks, as in the Bermuda Tux look, or for a more formal look that didn't show any bare leg, I think tights would be good.

I like the classic patent leather lace ups with a tux, but I think one needs a bit of a higher heel than normal when wearing a skirt. It just seems to look better. But Mary Janes could look great for the adverturesome man.

  8. Why, thank you Lorraine! Maybe I should share pics of my own "stylings" more often, shouldn't I?
